We are seeking to hire a team of student interpreters/translators to provide on-site, consecutive interpretation (English to Mandarin Chinese) during our training programs. Lectures and visits will occur both on- and off-campus.

Responsibilities

  • Provide consecutive oral interpretation for faculty-led lectures and seminars
  • Provide consecutive oral interpretation for U.S. business leaders during meetings and site visits
  • Facilitate discussions between Chinese program participants and University of Illinois faculty/staff (some Mandarin Chinese to English interpretation)
  • Provide written translation of lecture materials and various program documents
  • Research lecture topics to prepare for translation/interpretation

Position Requirements & Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Fluency in written and spoken Mandarin Chinese and English
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accountancy, Business, Economics, or field related to program
  • Graduate-level coursework in field related to program
  • Familiarity with Chinese banking/finance terms, or program-specific terms
  • Professional, outgoing, strong communication skills

Preferred Education, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities

  • Work or study abroad experience, preferably in a field related to program
  • Experience working with University of Illinois faculty/staff is preferred
  • Prior translating experience is preferred
  • Translation training or certification is a bonus
  • Advanced degrees welcome

Job Title

Graduate Hourly for the Global Education and Training (GET)

Type of Position

Hourly (30–40 hours/week)

The graduate hourly will assist GET staff members with implementation of educational training programs, including day to day interaction with international visitors and University of Illinois faculty. The graduate hourly will serve as a representative of GET on field trips and site visits to companies throughout the region. This position will also require coordination of activities for international students and executives studying at the University of Illinois for varying lengths during the summer. Office administrative tasks will be assigned as needed.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Supervise day-to-day activities -- both in and out of the classroom -- for international delegations attending programs administered by GET.
  • Assist with program planning and administrative tasks including documentation, providing access to campus services, such as Net ID’s, ARC access, McKinley, etc.
  • Prepare program materials, including campus resources guides, speaker bios, instructional materials, and name cards.
  • Research and communicated local social and cultural events for participants. Plan and oversee weekly activities for large groups of international students.
  • Arrange and lead cultural travel to regional cities such as Chicago, St. Louis, Springfield, and Indianapolis with participants.
  • Take photos/videos to feature on GET social media channels.
  • Brainstorm GET communications initiatives (i.e. ideas for newsletters, blogs, future campaigns etc.).
  • Ensure safety of executives and students on both cultural field trips and site visits.
  • Represent GET and the University of Illinois with internal and external constituents.
  • Work with program staff to evaluate program quality, and seek ways in which programs can be improved.
  • Drive participants in 15-passenger van to events.
  • Collaborate with administrators and faculty from colleges and departments across campus, to identify custom class topics, and schedule program-related seminars and visits that will meet the training goals of each participating organization.
  • Work as a team with other GET employees to achieve common goals.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Experience in working with international audiences and event planning needed. Candidate needs to be responsible, reliable, able to work independently, and have a positive attitude and flexibility in a fast-paced work environment. A valid driver’s license is a must. Candidate will need to be available to work some weekends, mornings, and evenings.

Compensation

$17.00/hour
